The Cure for Evil

A horrific crime was committed on December 14, 2012 when a lone gunman killed twenty first grade sons and daughters along with six adults at an elementary school in Newton, Conn. As a father of four I cannot begin to imagine the horror that these families are facing in the aftermath of this atrocity. My heart grieves for these parents and this community. Attempting to articulate words of comfort and encouragement for the families is very difficult because every word seems utterly inadequate. Moreover, I cannot begin to understand what these parents are going through.

Times like these make the job of President Obama very difficult. As a pastor I have some experience attempting to console families after the loss of a child. I have never had to do what President Obama attempted Sunday night at Sandy Hook Village. His task was daunting to say the least. I commend him for his efforts. His speech was both encouraging and comforting. He was adamant, and correctly so, in stating that such atrocities cannot be tolerated any longer.[1] He was also correct in stating that if these types of atrocities are going to end then “we must change.”[2] Moreover, he correctly identified the problem in his praise of the community for standing “in the face of unconscionable evil.”[3] President Obama is correct. This was an act of pure evil committed by a person consumed with evil. Unfortunately, our president, although he sees the problem, doesn’t want to address the problem just like the majority of our fellow countrymen. His solution is steeped with dichotomy.  He acknowledges that legislation cannot eliminate the problem of evil, but he insists that more legislation is what is needed.[4] Presumably he is advocating for tightening the gun control laws as a response to this horrific crime.

If getting rid of the weapons used to take the lives of our children is really the solution to the problem then we must broaden our scope. Let’s look at some facts to help us in this matter. Last year there were a total of 9,146 gun related homicides.[5] This figure includes all age groups. Yet, the leading cause of death between young people between the ages 10 and 19 is motor vehicle accidents.[6] Furthermore, alcohol is reported to have caused more deaths worldwide “than Aids, tuberculosis, or violence.”[7] Even more atrocious is the fact that every 26 seconds a child only 6 to 7 years younger than those slaughtered in Newtown is killed by abortion.[8] This equates to just over 1.2 million babies each year in the United States alone.[9] Suffice it to say a case can be made that guns are the least used tool in killing our children. What has not gotten much press coverage is the fact that 22 children were attacked by a knife wielding criminal in China on the same day as the Newton incident.[10] This was one of several knifing incidents over the last few years which “killed nearly 20 children and wounded more than 50.”[11] So, if we are serious about cracking down on the tools used to harm our children then we had better crack down on guns, knives, automobiles, alcohol, and abortion doctors. Yet, we all know that morality cannot be legislated. Unfortunately, our president is correct – no amount of law making will eradicate evil.

The president is also correct in identifying the problem in Newton as evil. The issue here is that the president, along with most Americans, suggests actions that deal only with the symptoms of evil rather than offering a solution for the evil itself. He, like most people, sees the problem as being outside influences upon the man rather than the evil radically depraved nature of the man. All too often we want to blame the nurturing of the man rather than the nature of the man. We blame his parents, his social status, his mental or emotional instability, his job, his wife, his finances, or his neighborhood. His problem we say is his environment. His problem is my problem. His problem is your problem. His problem is that he has a depraved nature bent towards sin and evil. The apostle Paul makes this very clear in his epistle to the Romans:

“No one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one. Their throat is an open grave; they use their tongues to deceive. The venom of asps is under their lips. Their mouth is full of curses and bitterness. Their feet are swift to shed blood; in their paths are ruin and misery, and the way of peace they have not known. There is no fear of God before their eyes.” (Rom 3:11-18 ESV)

Depravity has affected each of us and every aspect of our being. Our actions and attitudes are corrupted by sin and drive us to fulfill our evil desires. Humanity left to the dictates of its nature is doomed to a life of sin leading to eternal damnation. Our president is correct. We need to be changed if we want to see our world changed. However, true change does not come by the dictate of legislation. Change comes though redemption and redemption comes through repentance and faith in Jesus Christ and Him alone. If we want to protect our children from evil we must give them the gospel. If we want to see evil diminished in our world we must give people the gospel. If we want to love like Christ loved then we must be redeemed. If we want to be redeemed then we must repent and believe the gospel. Unfortunately in our society we are more afraid of the offensiveness of the true cure for evil than the evil itself. Church we have the cure. Let’s go inoculate someone with the gospel.

Grace,

Ronnie
